Southwestern Medical Center

LONG HISTORY OF PERSONALIZED CARE

Southwestern Medical Center traces its beginnings to 1907 - the year Oklahoma attained statehood - when it was the Lewis and Turner Hospital. The 12-bed structure was located at 4th Street and South Boundary, which is now known as Lee Boulevard. Two wards, one each for men and women, an operating room, and a doctors’ dressing room that doubled as a laboratory, filled the building.

Today, Southwestern Medical Center is a modern 243,267-square foot, 212-bed, Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations-approved, regional healthcare center built in 1986. Southwestern Medical Center is a private hospital owned by Capella Healthcare, a healthcare company that was created with the specific mission of partnering with communities to build strong local healthcare systems. Today’s hospital is a vast improvement from the original structure. We are proud of our tradition to nurture, heal and help those who need the services of Southwestern Medical Center.

Two-thirds of our patients come to us from Comanche County, with the remaining one-third visiting us from a variety of counties spread across Southern Oklahoma and North Texas. Our long history of involvement in the community, and in all of Southwest Oklahoma, has led us to take our responsibility very seriously to provide quality healthcare to the communities we serve.

OUR GOAL: QUALITY, COST-EFFECTIVE CARE

At Southwestern Medical Center, we are committed and continually strive to provide you with the quality care that you expect. We invest in training and technology to provide individualized service to our patients. In addition, we are recognized by national accrediting agencies, such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the standard for accreditation of hospitals nation-wide. Our Physical Rehab Unit is accredited by The Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The services offered by our Cancer Center are approved by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The hospital’s laboratory has a Certificate of Accreditation by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and is approved by the College of American Pathology (CAP). These certifications are evidence of the quality services we provide which are recognized by national accrediting entities. This recognition demonstrates that Southwestern Medical Center goes above and beyond what is required of hospitals to operate in today’s healthcare climate.

It is also Southwestern Medical Center’s mission to participate in the training and development of future healthcare professionals and leaders. We are actively involved in the University of Oklahoma Family Practice Residency Program located in Lawton. In addition, we are a participating facility for the training of four Nursing Programs (three RN programs, and one LPN program), Pharmacy internships, Radiology training for two schools, Ultrasound training, a Health Information Management training program, a Respiratory Care training program, Physical and Occupational Therapy training programs, as well as being a training site for Healthcare Administration programs.

Location:

Lawton is an educational, cultural and medical hub of southwest Oklahoma, offering all the conveniences of a big city with the advantages of a small town. It is the third largest city in Oklahoma and offers a stable economy and affordable housing.

Lawton-Fort Sill is nationally recognized as one of the most culturally diversified communities in the United States and offers plenty of outdoor activities.

BusinessWeek (No. 7 edition) named Lawton as the best place in Oklahoma to raise children.
